Bronxdale / Allerton Bronx Apartments Neighborhood Information for Apartment Renters
|
Like almost every neighborhood in the Bronx, Bronxdale started as a farming village. However, Bronxdale was near the water and used its access to water to power factories and to become . It changed into a suburb with the opening of the subway in the 1920s. The first migrants were Jews from the Lower East Side of Manhattan because the Bronx was a step up in those days. Times changed, and in the 1970s and 1980s, gang activity, drug dealing, and other crime plagued the area as well as most of the Bronx. Today, it's a neighborhood on the rebound. Community activists are working to restore the neighborhood to its safe residential roots. In addition to its base African-American and Hispanic population, Bronxdale has welcomed immigrants from African countries such as Ghana and Nigeria. White Plains Road is the neighborhood's main north-south artery.
The Allerton family history in America dates back to Isaac Allerton (1586-1659), who arrived on the Mayflower in 1620. Allerton was the fifth signer of the Mayflower Compact, which ensured the establishment of a civil government, the rule of law, and governance by mutual consent. The Bronx is a central part of America's history! Remember that as you make your home here.
