Morris Heights / Mount Hope Bronx Apartments Neighborhood Information for Apartment Renters
|
Morris Heights and Mount Hope are struggling communities in the South Bronx that are working to make their future as distinguished as their pasts. These areas are among the poorest in the Bronx, but recent government and private investment has resulted in a state-of-the-art community Center in Mount Hope. Mount Hope Housing Company, Inc. is a community development organization that rehabilitates and manages affordable housing as well as providing an array of services to help its residents achieve new opportunities to move up the economic ladder. Residents have seen that this commitment to area can be measured in reduced crime, increased property values, a growing local economy and improved quality of life.
Morris Heights takes its name from the mansion of Richard Morris, the brother of Lewis Morris, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and half brother of Gouverneur Morris, a principal framer of the U.S. Constitution. He became the second chief justice to serve the new state of New York. Gouverneur Morris II promoted Port Morris in Morris Heights as a commercial landing when steamboats chugged up and down the Harlem River.
