The neighborhoods of City Council District 16 are among the city's poorest, with the highest rate of unemployment and the lowest median household income. The students in the area attend some of the city's worst performing schools. But those who live there also point out that much is positive and stable about the area, thanks in large part to local organizations, not-for-profit agencies, and houses of worship that help hold the neighborhoods together.

High Bridge takes its name from a huge aqueduct that was built in the 1840s to bring water form the Croton Aqueduct to the city. Originally, it had massive stone arches (like Roman aqueducts had) for its entire length. Many of the Irish immigrant laborers were housed at the construction site and were the first to live in the community. The arches survive on the Bronx side, but the steel span was constructed in the 1920s to allow navigation on the Harlem River. The opening of the subways in the 1920s promoted dense residential development.

Starting at 138th Street and running north to Mosholu Parkway, the Grand Boulevard and Concourse (its proper name) is the Bronx's grandest street, four and one half miles long. Designed in 1892 to give access to the parkland to be built north of the city, it was finally constructed in the early 1900s. The Concourse runs between tree-shaded islands, originally meant to separate bicycle, horse and pedestrian traffic. The Concourse is lined with apartment buildings, many of them brilliant examples of the 1930s Art Deco and Art Moderne styles.

"Claremont" was a large estate owned by the Zborowski family. Thus, when the Village of Claremont was established in 1852, it took the name from the estate. Some call this area Bathgate.
