Norwood / Bedford Park Bronx Apartments Neighborhood Information for Apartment Renters
|
Bedford Park and Norwood areas are heavily Irish, with a growing Eastern European (Slavic and Albanian) component. Also, the city's largest Korean community is in Bedford Park along East 204th St.
Norwood is a middle-class community of families, artists, and activists. It's a diverse neighborhood, with a population that includes Puerto Rican, Dominican, Asian, Irish, Jewish, and African-American residents, and it sometimes seems that every one of them are community activists. Visit the Museum of Bronx History, housed in a landmark farmhouse built in 1758, and learn all about this vibrant borough. Norwood has lots of green space so you won't feel as hemmed in as you do in some city neighborhoods.
Bedford Park, developed in the 1880s in honor of the same-named community in London, was a planned area of single-family homes and spacious yards. However, with the new subway lines built in the 1930s, apartment buildings and more modest homes attracted commuters. This neighborhood hosts 25,000 high school and college students. The Bronx High School of Science, one of the best public schools in the country, is in the neighborhood; it boasts five Nobel laureates. Lehman College is on 37 acres of campus, featuring what the college calls "collegiate Gothic architecture." Bronx Science and Lehman sit on area called Educational mile of the 125-acre Jerome Park.
