Dumbo & Brooklyn Heights Neighborhood Information for Renters |
Brooklyn Heights is New York’s oldest suburb. The Landmarks Preservation Law protects all the grand brownstone townhouses, giving Brooklyn Heights its time-capsule charm. You’ll find Federal, Gothic Revival, Greek Revival, and Queen Ann townhouses. The Heights are truly “high” – this is the highest point in Brooklyn. The view of Manhattan is spectacular. This is a full-service neighborhood, well stocked with restaurants, shops, parks, and grocery stores. Montague Street is the main shopping area. Ten subway lines in the neighborhood make Brooklyn Heights one of the easiest places from which to travel around the city.
Dumbo (named for the areas Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, which is northeast of the Brooklyn Bridge) is a neighborhood in development. Many abandoned warehouses have been converted into artist’s lofts, and there is some new residential construction, but much still needs to be done to make this an easy place to live. There are no parks and no direct subway lines. This is not a family-friendly area since there are no local public schools and no local subways, but it’s great if you’re the type who needs to live and work in the same space. Night life is tough to find.
