Gravesend / Homecrest Neighborhood Information for Apartment Renters
|
|
Gravesend was founded in 1643 by Lady Deborah Moody, an Englishwoman seeking religious freedom, and is either named after the English seaport of Gravesend, Kent or is a corruption of the Dutch word Gravenzande that means "The Count's Beach". Gravesend is a rare English settlement in New York where most villages were originally Dutch, The Gravesend Cemetery is a historical treasure that is woefully neglected. Thirty-five percent of all immigrants in the early 1990s period settled in Brooklyn, with immigrants from the former Soviet Union making up one-quarter of that total. Gravesend-Homecrest was the most popular destination. There is a Hassidic community in Gravesend.
