Canarsie Flatlands Neighborhood Information for Apartment Renters
|
"Canarsee" was the name of the Lenape Tribe located throughout Brooklyn and parts of Staten Island, Queens and possibly Manhattan. Carnarsie and Flatlands have a beach town feel, and most of the residents go to Canarsie Beach Park for typical suburban summer fun: sailing, motorboating, fishing, and picnics while sunbathing. This is about as suburban as you'll find in Brooklyn. Most of these neighborhoods were developed in the 1950s, so the housing tends to look the same: single family brick or split-level with a driveway and a small front yard. Youíll find slightly newer, 1960s multi-family houses in the Paedergat area of Canarsie. African-American and Caribbean newcomers have made these neighborhoods a happy melting pot. The main shopping streets are Rockaway Parkway and Flatlands Ave. Because there's only one subway line servicing the area, a car is needed to get around the neighborhood to shop and visit, making Canarsie and Flatlands very suburban.
