Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, Prospect Heights

Neighborhood Information for Renters

These neighborhoods ring Prospect Park (almost as large as Central Park), which has two of Brooklyn's cultural crown jewels, the Botanical Gardens and the Brooklyn Museum, as well as its own Zoo. Brooklyn's third cultural Crown Jewel is the Brooklyn Academy of Music, which is just north of the park. Living here puts you squarely in the midst of the what's happening in New York City's largest borough.

Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, Prospect Heights Park Slope: A mix of all what's best about New York City. Housing price is measured by one's closeness to Prospect Park and the Grand Army Plaza, with the north part being the most expensive. You'll find samples of Queen Ann, Romanesque, and Renaissance Revival architecture. Seventh Ave is the main commercial street.

Windsor Terrace: A well-kept New York secret. Zoning laws prevent the building of high rises. Residents here do not like change. Houses tend to be handed down from generation to generation, resulting in a stable community. The flip side is its insularity—nonconformists stick out like a sore thumb.

Prospect Heights: Just to the northeast of Prospect Park, close to the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. More affordable than Park Slope with streets as lovely as the Slope, albeit more modestly constructed. The avenues are a little barren of yuppie-friendly shops like Starbucks or Barnes & Nobel. Has been revitalized from its low point -- the riots of the 1960s -- to become a work in progress. Shopping options are meager. If there's a bargain in NY, it's this neighborhood.
