Sunset Park, Borough Park, Dyker Heights Neighborhood Information for Renters
|
Sunset Park has hills and great views of Manhattan, especially in the western edge of the 25-acre Sunset Park for which the neighborhood is named. It has "Little Norway" and "Chinatown" areas to complement the Puerto Rican, African-American and Asian influences in the community. Unpretentious rentals are easy to find in this no-nonsense neighborhood.
Borough Park is a conservative community almost entirely inhabited by the Hassidim, an Orthodox Jewish sect. Shops cater to the kosher needs of the residents, and you'll find many discount shops due to the large families the Hassidim tend to have. This is not a diverse neighborhood, and not much fun if you're single.
Dyker Heights is named for the Van Dyke brothers who settled here in the early 1700s. It surrounds the Dyker Beach Park, a 242-acre piece of heaven in NYC. The hills provide for lovely views of New York Bay. Families love living here. Italians are the dominant culture, but Chinese, Russian, and Middle Eastern immigrants have begun to move into the area, attracted by the safety and calm here. You'll need a car, however, because there's no subway service and only limited bus service.

Kosher stores in Borough Park; some of the small, weird houses in Dyker Heights (Look for design mistakes - like grand columns on small houses, elaborate walkways to modest homes, lots of lawn decorations); the public golf course in Dyker Beach park; a Bay view from a hill in Dyker Heights, the Gothic main gate of the Greenwood Cemetery, a historical landmark (25 St and Fifth Ave); church tower of St Michael's catholic church, which can been seen from anywhere in Sunset Park.
