Jersey City & Bayonne Neighborhood Information for Renters
|
These unpretentious towns on the waterfront were havens for the working classes employed in heavy industry. Bayonne began as an oil refinery center in 1875 and retains its blue-collar feel by being a large shipping center.
Jersey City: Jersey City attracted Irish immigrants to work on the railroads and canals, transferring coal that came from Pennsylvania. Bayonne's population in 2003 was about 61,000. Jersey City's population of 239,000 in 15 sq. miles makes it one of the most dense cities in the US.
Highlights: The Pulaski Skyway, built in 1932, is a 3 1/2 mile bridge the connects Jersey City to Newark. It gives you a great arial view of the horizon. Nearby parks are Liberty State Park, Van Vorst Park, and Lincoln Park. (The name "Liberty" has been added to many north Jersey public places in a burst of patriotism after Sept. 11, 2001.) The Jersey City Museum and the Liberty Science Center provide some cultural attractions.
