Fort Lee, Edgewater & Cliffside Park Neighborhood Information for Renters |
These towns south of the George Washington Bridge are atop the Palisades, a pre-historic fault line that drops dramatically to the shoreline of the Hudson River and gives you spectacular views of upper Manhattan and the GW Bridge.
On the down side, traffic can get quite congested
and parking is a constant problem if you don't have a garage space. Fort Lee and Edgewater have become a center of Asian immigration in New Jersey. Half of the children in the local schools are Japanese or Korean, and 95% go on to college. Fort Lee has become the home of many banks and communications businesses. 
Cliffside Park has changed from a town of Polish, Italian, and Irish immigrants into an upscale bedroom community. It has lovely views of the Hudson, safe streets, good municipal services, and a variety of shops and restaurants. Anderson Ave is the main commercial strip.
Highlights: The Palisades are cliffs that run from the Hudson/Bergen County border to the New York Stateline. The name "palisades" comes from the military enclosure made of spikes driven into the ground, and was applied here because the rockface has columnar ridges that resemble spikes. Palisades Park has terrific walking paths for you to linger amid the natural beauty of the cliffs. The Long Path takes you along the crest, and the Shore Path takes you along the Hudson shoreline. The Mitsuwa Marketplace (595 River Road) in Edgewater is a mall with a giant grocery store of Asian foods that attracts a stream of visitors on the weekends. The Archetypus Cafe (264 Old River Road) in Edgewater is known for its weird decor and welcoming atmosphere.

These are family-friendly places. The singles scene is over the bridge in Manhattan.
Type of Housing:
Fort Lee is where New Jersey's "Gold Coast" started with the construction of the first high-rise condo, Horizon House, in 1961. While the town is known for its high rises, there are some newer, single-family homes and duplexes available. Surprisingly, almost 40% of the housing stock is rental. Edgewater has new waterfront condos with marinas and some duplexes. Cliffside Park has tidy Cape Cods and Victorians in one and two-family sizes. You'll find larger homes and high-rises nearer to the cliffs. Windsor Towers are the town's luxury high-rises.

NJ Transit Bus route #22 goes from the Winston Towers in Cliffside Park to Hoboken Terminal. From the Terminal, PATH trains take you to either the World Trade Center or to 33rd St and 6th Ave with stops at Christopher St, 8th St, and 14th St. There are many NJ Transit bus options that take you to Hoboken Terminal or to the Port Authority at 42 St and 8th Ave in Manhattan.
