Hackensack & Englewood

Neighborhood Information for Renters

Hackensack is a small town hidden behind the hustle and bustle of being the Bergen county
seat. It has recently seen a demographic shift from the traditional European immigrant to newcomers from all over. The schools worked very hard to adjust and now sees almost 80% of its students go on to college while keeping its numerous athletic programs intact. Many more
athletic programs for children are provided by the Hackensack YMCA. Its downtown shopping district has been bled of its vitality due to the local malls (Garden State Mall is nearby where Routes 17 and 4 intersect).

Englewood is primarily a residential community with a large industrial park near Route 4 and a newer retail complex on the west side of Palisades Ave. Palisades Ave is the main shopping thoroughfare almost evenly split into an upscale eastern side and a more meat-and-potatoes western side. This class division has intruded into its school system where many white residents send their children to private schools.

Highlights: There is much that adds to the quality of life in these towns. Flat Rock Brook Nature Center is a 150-acre preserve that has miles of walking trails to take you close to nature. The performing arts shine at the John Harms Center, the Williams Center for the Arts (both in Englewood), the Orrie de Nooyer Auditorium at the Bergen Technical High School and the Center for Modern Dance education in Hackensack. The USS Ling, a WWII-era diesel submarine is open for tours at the New Jersey Naval Museum (at Court and River Sts). Englewood's Mackay Park has an indoor ice-skating rink and swimming pool. Doll collectors must visit the Stueben House, built in 1713 and maintained by the Bergen County Historical Society, has the oldest doll in the US: Betsey Cox, a wax doll made in 1700.

Singles/families:

New Jersey is the most suburban state in the U.S., so it's not surprising that families make up roughly 60 - 65% of the population in these towns.

Type of Housing:
Hackensack has many one and two-family houses on tree-shaded streets, and several garden apartment complexes, all moderately priced, along with a few luxury high-rise condos. Englewood has a luxury condo complex (Cross Creek) and million-dollar mansions, and more modest starter housing.

Typical price range:
Studios:
$770 - $1200
1 BRs: $950 - $1785
2 Brs: $1400 - $1900

Transportation links to midtown/downtown:
