Montclair NJ Neighborhood Information for Renters |
Montclair is an upscale community that takes great pride in its embrace of diversity and in its fine public schools. It has been a popular suburb for New Yorkers since the mid-1800s when a train line was built for an easy commute into the city. Downtown Montclair has cinemas that show independent films that you won't see at the multiplex and has one of the best varieties of restaurants and boutiques in the northeast. Its reputation for wealth is accurate, but there's also middle- and working-class neighborhoods of long-time residents who are committed to civic duty.
Highlights: Montclair State University is not in Montclair; it's in neighboring Little Falls. That said, there are many attractions in the town: 14 parks; the Montclair Art Museum which was the first museum in the US to be open to the public; the Israel Crane house, a 1796 Federal style house that illustrates the life of a wealthy colonial citizen; the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens that is free to the public in May and June. The school system sponsors many year-round student activities.
