Newark - Elizabeth - Harrison Neighborhood Information for Renters |
These scrappy, unpretentious towns are not the prettiest places in the Garden State but they're affordable and colorful. Newark is the county seat of Essex County and has benefited from major state investments in its infrastructure. A beautification of its river front is in progress to match the upgrade brought to the city with the popular New Jersey Performing Arts Center and the new minor league Bears baseball stadium. The Ironbound section is where much of Newark's classic architecture is still in tact and is the locus of the Portuguese community. Newark is finally having success in recovering from the destructive riots of 1967 and 1968.
Harrison is an Irish enclave in Hudson County, not to be confused with the Harrison in Gloucester County. The Scots and Irish came to Harrison to
work in the mills when Harrison was an industrial center.
Elizabeth is the Union County seat and is the largest seaport in the U.S. Nearly 80% of what our nation imports comes through Elizabeth Seaport first.
Highlights: Elizabeth is home to north Jersey's first Ikea store and the huge Jersey Gardens discount mall. Newark's Branch Brook Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmstead (the man who designed New York's Central Park) is especially beautiful during the cherry blossom season in late spring. There are 22,000 cherry trees in bloom — more than in DC's more famous garden. Newark Museum on Washington St has the fabulous Ballentine House behind the main building. It's a perfectly preserved Victorian home that shows you daily life in the late 1800s. Penn Station, the terminal for PATH and NJ Transit, is an Art Deco masterpiece.
