Forest Hills Neighborhood Information for Apartment Renters |
Forest Hills began as a planned community designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, the man who designed Central Park. He set the tone for Forest Hills as the classy Queens neighborhood. The neo-Tudor dominance in housing styles clues you to the residents' aspirations. The U. S. Open, back when it was played on grass and was as classy as Wimbledon, was held at the West Side Tennis Club until the Open moved to the faster, harder courts of Flushing Meadows in the mid-70s. Austin St is the neighborhood's main shopping artery and boasts everything you'll find in Manhattan, but classier. Forest Hills is ethnically mixed but largely Jewish (Joey Ramone's real name is Jeffrey Hyman), Catholic and Asian. Many Russian-Jewish immigrants have recently moved into the northernmost part of Forest Hills, turning 108th Street south of the Expressway into a raucous Eastern European shopping bazaar. Change comes slowly to this area because residents like it the way it is: expensive.
