Flushing & Auburndale

Neighborhood Information

Flushing Queens apartments Flushing, along with Elmhurst and Jamaica, is one of the three colonial villages in Queens. Dutch sailors exploring Flushing Bay in 1628 saw a vast area of marsh and meadow and called it "Vlissingen" after a town in Holland. The name means "salt meadow valley." The colony was established in the 1640s and the English called it "Flushing." Quaker religious freedom fighter, John Bowne, built Bowne House here in 1661 and is considered to be the birthplace of religious freedom in the United States. The famous open globe, the "Unisphere", a reminder of the 1963 World's Fair, sits in the 1200 acres of  Flushing Meadows - Corona Park and kind of sums up this corner of Queens. It’s the crossroads of the world! In this large, middle class neighborhood, you'll find signs in Korean, Hindi, Pakistani, Chinese, Spanish, Russian, and English on Main Street. There are almost as many varieties of trees (some references say 2000 varieties) as people because Flushing had the first nursery in colonial times. The Queens Botanical Gardens, the Queens Zoo, and the Queens Museum are all in this neighborhood. The Queens Borough Public Library on Main St is the busiest branch in the whole system. Oh yeah, the Mets play here at Shea Stadium and the Williams sisters play here at the U.S.T.A. National Tennis Center during the U. S. Open. A shoppers' paradise is to be found on Main St. and on Roosevelt Ave. Flushing was home to African-American Lewis Latimer, who prepared mechanical drawings for Alexander Graham Bell's patent application for his telephone design and also wrote an incandescent electric lighting and engineering book which became a guide for lighting. His residence can be seen at 34-41 137th St .

Auburndale Queens Apartment Rental Auburndale was developed in 1900s on ninety acres of farmland. The neighborhood is located in northern Queens between Murray Hill and Bayside. Auburndale was developed primarily as a residential community with good schools, great landscape, and the idea of an easy thirty-minute commute to Penn Station. Most of the houses here are charming brick two story homes, housing small to medium sized families with children. The demographics are middle-income families from all over the globe. Auburndale is largely Greek, Italian, and Irish influenced. It has a touch of South American and Asian influence, as well.
