Jamaica, Queens Neighborhood Information
|
According to one source, "Jamaica" is the mispronunciation of the Canarsie Indian word for "beaver." This part of Queens was home to Rufus King, a noted anti-slavery delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787 and his house has been preserved for tours in Kings Park in the middle of Jamaica. This neighborhood has struggled since its gracious colonial heyday, alas, and needs a little more investment to make it a cultural destination. The city is hoping that the new terminal for the AirTrain to JFK Airport will help spark more development in Jamaica. Jamaica is a neighborhood in search of an identity. However, its lack if distinction makes it one of the most affordable communities in the New York metro area.
