Sunnyside is named for Sunnyside Hill farm near the Pennsylvania Railroad station that opened up this part of Queens for development. The neighborhood became largely Irish, and today residents now include Koreans, Colombians, Romanians and Chinese. The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway further chopped up the area, so many streets are dead-ends or seem unusually short. Sunnyside Gardens, on the north end of Queens Blvd, is the most desirable part of Sunnyside, a cheerful mixture of apartment houses and homes. A walk down Queens Blvd. in Sunnyside will provide any and all services, Irish pubs, good restaurants and a very vibrant neighborhood with the epicenter at 46th St. and Queens Blvd.

Woodside: Yes, even Queens used to be woods once, back in colonial times. In the late 1600s, John Andrew Kelly built a home called "Woodside" in appreciation of the forest. A village was finally developed in 1867 by Benjamin W. Hitchcock, who laid out streets and sold lots. A large number of Irish families moved into the area from the tenements in Manhattan. In fact, Woodside was once known as "Irishtown." By the 1980s immigrants from China, Colombia, Korea, the Dominican Republic, and to a lesser extent from India, Ecuador, the Philippines, Guyana, Peru and Ireland all became neighbors to one another. It's truly a gathering place for many nations of the world. This is a large neighborhood that was developed in fits and starts, so no single architectural style dominates. Housing options run the gamut from deluxe to bargain-basement. Roosevelt Ave. is the neighborhood's principle commercial thoroughfare.
