New Rochelle - Scarsdale - White Plains Neighborhood Information
|
New Rochelle: This city was settled by a group of French Huguenots who named it after La Rochelle in France. This is one of the more diverse villages in Westchester: from public housing to shoreline mansions, from multi-generational families to newer : "Far Upper East Side" singles. Downtown New Rochelle, recently thought of as an urban blight, has been revitalized with New Rock City shopping center and the large rental complex just across from the Metro North station.
Scarsdale: Many of the retail shops in this town are decorated in mock-Tudor style, harking back to Scarsdale's founding by the Englishman Caleb Heathcote in 1702. Scarsdale was the first town in Westchester to zone itself as entirely residential in 1922, and it has not changed since. The schools in Scarsdale are among the best in the U.S.; the Dept of Education has sited them as examples that other districts should follow. This is a community of achievers who keep the volunteer civic organizations fully active.
White Plains: The city's name is an English translation of the Siwanoy Indian term for the area, "Quarropas", which meant "white marshes." It is the county seat for Westchester and boasts a prosperous mix of residential, business, retail, and government activity. Like Scarsdale, residents are heavily involved in civic organizations as volunteers. Not only is White Plains a commuter's dream for its easy access to Manhattan, The Tappan Zee Bridge, and three major highways, but more than 200,000 commuters come into White Plains daily to work. There's four malls to shop in downtown, more options than anywhere else in Westchester.
