Moe, Shemp, and Curly of "The Three Stooges" grew up in Brownsville. In their day, Brownsville was predominantly Jewish and politically radical; it elected Socialist and American Labor Party candidates to the state assembly throughout the 1920s and 1930s.
Today, the neighborhood is mostly Caribbean, Hispanic, and African-American. Though there are still weedy lots and abandoned buildings, the neighborhood has seen much new housing built. Many recent developments were built by non-profit groups, but now traditional developers are becoming active because they know Brownsville is profitable. |
