This building was constructed by Ogden L. Mills, a former Secretary of the Treasury, in 1899 as a workers' hostel. At the time the rooms cost 10 cents for one night; you'll have to pay a bit more to stay here these days. Theodore Dreiser stayed for 20 cents a night. Later, when it was a seedy hotel, Allen Ginsberg lived here in 1951.
Don't worry -- the building was renovated in 2000 for your comfort.
If you're looking to experience the Village side of Manhattan, you can't do better than this building. It's on a street that features in many folk songs of the 60s (Simon & Garfunkle, Bob Dylan) and where the Mamas and the Papas composed "California Dreaming" one cold New York winter. |
