The Morris-Jumel mansion is the oldest surviving house in New York City. Built in 1765, it was initially occupied by a Brittish colonel, Roger Morris. General George Washington used it as headquarters in 1776. It became a popular tavern during the early 1800s. Eventually, it was purchased by a rich french merchant, Stephen Jumel and his extravagant wife, Eliza. After spending several years in Paris hobnobbing with Napolean, Stephen died in a carriage accident and Eliza remarried former vice president Aaron Burr. Today, this mansion is a fascinating museum featuring 9 restored rooms, including Washington's office. |
