You'll be a block and a half from Carl Schurz Park, where you can take in the East River's ebb and flow as it swirls around Hell Gate.
The East River isn't a real river -- it's an estuary with high and low tides. In 1614, the Dutch explorer Adriaen Block gave the East River's midway point the name Helegat, meaning "bright passage." But as a place of whirlpools and dangerous rocks, the Anglicization that stuck was Hell Gate.
This building and its sister building share the Superintendant and maintenance staff. We÷re not sure in which building the Super actually lives, but he/she is never farther than a phone call away. |
