Clinton is the new name for an old NYC neighborhood. It used to be called "Hell's Kitchen" because of the heat generated from the factories in the area. The new name is in honor of DeWitt Clinton, the Gov of New York State who championed building the Erie Canal. It took 8 years to build -- from 1817 to 1825.
The canal made an immense contribution to the wealth and importance of both New York City and New York State, and made boomtowns out of Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Rome, Utica and Schenectady. |
