Did you know that the East River isn't a real river? It's an estuary with high and low tides. In 1614, the Dutch explorer Adriaen Block gave the East River's midway point the name Helegat, meaning "bright passage." But as a place of whirlpools and dangerous rocks, the Anglicization that stuck was Hell Gate.
