Leroy Street is named for Jacob Leroy, who was a trader of goods (not money) and who had his business on this street. He made a ton of money running the British blocksades in the War of 1812.
"Le roy" mean "the king" in French, and there once was a rumor that the street's name came from the secret burial place of Louis Charles, the son of Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVI. Louis Charles actually died at age 10 in France and never came to America. |
