Here's a tip that might win you some trivia challenges: New Yorkers commonly call the Beaux Arts train station Grand Central "Station" but that's actually the name of the post office on 45th St./Lex Ave. The RR station is a "terminal" because trains "terminate" there.
The original Grand Central was built in 1871 by railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt. After a tragic train collision in 1902, steam locomotives were banned and the station was shut down. However, it reopened 1913 and has been busy ever since. |
