You'll be a block and a half from Carl Schurz Park, where you can take in the East River's ebb and flow as it swirls around Hell Gate.
The East River isn't a real river -- it's an estuary with high and low tides. In 1614, the Dutch explorer Adriaen Block gave the East River's midway point the name Helegat, meaning "bright passage." But as a place of whirlpools and dangerous rocks, the Anglicization that stuck was Hell Gate.
This building and its sister building share the Superintendant and maintenance staff. WeĠre not sure in which building the Super actually lives, but he/she is never farther than a phone call away. |
