Nadine’s Book Nook: Sweet and Low

\"sweetnlow.png\"I was away for a few days in Florida, and here\’s a tip for anyone planning a summer trip to FLA: be sure to have something to read for the inevitable delay at the airport. I had to sit for 7 hours in the Fort Lauderdale Airport yesterday (June 16, 2008) while the storms cleared up here in NYC. Thankfully, I was prepared and I had a book to keep me occupied

I had Sweet and Low, a terrific story about the role sugar played in world history and in Western civilization and about the sugar substitute Sweet\’N Low manufactured in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. The book reviews last year all focused on it\’s being a family story, but I wasn\’t at all interested in the Eisenstadts.

Nadine\’s Note: Avoid sugar, Sweet\’N Low, Splenda, Equal, NutraSweet, diet soft drinks, and everything with a phoney sweetener. There\’s a natural sweetener from herbs that\’s so much healthier: Stevia.

I bought Sweet\’N Low for my trip when I saw this page:

I totally love the name Flatbush. I come from Missoula, Montana and other parts West. I grew up with Spanish names, German names, Inuit names, Washoe names; lots of syllables with unexpected letter combinations. I kinda fell in love with the name \”Flatbush\” when I first heard it when I was about 13. It was so different, so direct, so . . . New York. Two hard, short syllables you can spit out quickly and move on. Everything moves fast here in the city, unlike the pokey West.

Imagine my thrill when I started in the Listings Dept at RDNY.com and learned that there\’s another \”flat\” place in Brooklyn: Flatlands. I must visit these places soon.
