$3,315 as an average rent? They must be renting to a different group of people. Of course there are many who can afford that price, but we work with hundreds of renters all the time, and I can tell you that the average, typical renter in Manhattan is paying less than that. I don’t know exactly what the average renter is paying, but I’m certain it’s less.

Hey, Amy:

The blog at RDNY.com seldom posts about commercial real estate. Quite frankly, we\’re not all that interested in the ups and downs of the commercial market, only the residential rental market. But this post, we felt, was a public service to you, our readers. After all, when you shop at a high end store like Victoria\’s Secret or Abercrombie & Fitch, or work for book publisher Hachette Book Group or advertising firm Euro RSCG Worldwide, you don\’t expect to bring bugs home to infest your apartment.
Perfect 1 BR in the best part of Brooklyn Heights – steps from the Promenade on Pierrepont Street. $2,100 per month.
Folks, we are getting very close to a state of equilibrium in the rental market, the place where rental demand comes close to matching existing vacancies. I\’m not a statistician, so I don\’t have hard numbers to prove it, but we here at RDNY.com are beginning to see the number of available listings decline while the number of new potential renters is climbing. We are beginning to see landlords raising rents cautiously and we are beginning to see renters looking at their backup neighborhoods.
The Hunt\’s Joyce Cohen profiles in the NY Times Real Estate Section how a renter, after several disappointments, finds an apartment through RDNY.com.
Now, we here at RDNY.com do a lot of renting. We currently have about 4,100 active listings. I can tell you, that the average rent actually paid by our clients is a lot less than $3,812. We obviously have a different clientele. But why try to pass off an \”average rent of $3,812\” when it isn\’t so? Why don\’t they just say, the average rent paid by well to do New Yorkers is $3,812 but for everyone else, it\’s a lot less. That would be a lot more honest.
First, let me disclose that there are some negative reviews about RDNY.com on Yelp. There are also some very highly complimentary reviews of us, which we greatly appreciate. But I\’ve been pissed at Yelp for many months. They are definitely biased.
This year (2011) RDNY.com enters its 16th year of business. If there is one thing we have learned (and we\’ve learned many things) it\’s that New Yorkers are fascinated with the world of real estate and apartments. There are many other fine sources of information about the real estate scene. Celebrity sites chronicle the buying and selling of multimillion dollar…
