Baychester / Pelham Gardens (Bronx Apartments) Neighborhood Information for Apartment Renters

Baychester: Baychester is famous for Co-op City, one of the largest commercial housing developments in the United States. It has 35 buildings, about 60,000 residents, stores, movie theaters, schools, a fire house, and zip code. Unlike most of the Bronx which was opened up when the subway was extended from Manhattan, this corner of the Bronx was made practical by construction of the Long Island bridges, and the Bruckner and Cross-Bronx Expressways. Apart from Co-op City, the neighborhood consists principally of one and two family houses and a large shopping mall.
Pelham Gardens: Pelham Gardens, like all of the "Pelham" neighborhoods in the Bronx and Westchester, is named for Thomas Pell who bought a 50,000-acre tract of land from local Indians in 1654.
