Bruckner / Castle Hill (Bronx Apartments) Neighborhood Information for Apartment Renters
- Bruckner
- Bruckner (sometimes called Soundview) is usually recognized as the birthplace of hip hop, home to musicians Zulu Nation, Afrika Bambaataa, Jazzy Jay, GrandWizzard Theodore, Kool DJ Red Alert, The Chief Rocker Busy Bee, GrandMaster Caz, Big Pun, Drag-On, and Lord Tariq. It's a lively neighborhood with graffiti murals everywhere. In the 1920s, the Westchester Avenue subway brought Manhattan tenement refugees to the area and its modest houses. The area grew even more quickly with the construction of housing projects in the late 1950's. This neighborhood is one of the fastest growing areas in the Bronx because of the recent surge in the number of two family row houses being built because of the large amounts of empty lots). Before the 1990's row house surge however, the area was primarily low-rise apartment buildings, high-rises, and of course, housing projects. Bruckner was hit with large amounts of crime in the 1970s through the crack epidemic of the 1980s. It's still a little dangerous, but many NYPD initiatives have come into the area to help the area to become safer.
- Castle Hill
- Castle Hill got its name from its most striking topographical feature, a small hut that Captain Adrian Block, a 17th-century European, thought worthy of a castle. Today Castle Hill primarily is home to low- to middle-income Hispanic and African-American families. Housing options consist of a few single-family homes, but mainly there are apartment buildings and public housing projects. There are four primary commercial strips in the precinct - Westchester Avenue, Castle Hill Avenue, White Plains Road and Parkchester. The neighborhood's desirability has diminished over the years due to crime, but today Castle Hill is reaping the benefits of neighboring Parkchester's renaissance.
Demographics
- Singles / Families
- Although this is a fast-growing area for families, it's not great for children because there's very little play space. Soundview Park is essentially undeveloped and in poor condition. In the past two years, however, the City has taken important steps to revitalize the park with the addition of a 1.3-mile greenway and steps toward shoreline habitat restoration. Clason Point Park is small - 4 acres - and derelict. However, there is a burgeoning night life for singles.
