People from Brooklyn, New York
In the last several years, Brooklyn has become the second most requested borough for new renters in New York (the first most requested is Manhattan). In many ways, it has supplanted Manhattan as the center of hip and cool in New York. A vibrant indie arts scene is alive and well in Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Clinton Hill, and Fort Greene. It has also begun to spread in such formerly off-bounds neighborhoods as Red Hook, Gowanus, and Bedford-Stuyvesant.
A Brief History of Brooklyn
Originally named The Village of Breuckelen, after Breukelen in the province of Utrecht in the Netherlands, and chartered by the Dutch West India Company in 1646; it became the first true municipality in what is now New York State. At the time, Breuckelen was part of New Netherland. Other villages which were later incorporated into Brooklyn were Boswijk (Bushwick), Nieuw Utrecht (New Utrecht), and Nieuw Amersfoort (Flatlands). A few houses and cemeteries still bear witness to the Dutch origins of the borough of Brooklyn.
The first major battle in the American Revolutionary War following the Declaration of Independence and the largest battle of the entire conflict was the Battle of Long Island (also called the Battle of Brooklyn) which began on August, 27 1776. General George Washington was defeated in this battle, although he managed to regroup his forces for a brilliant strategic retreat across the East River into Manhattan.
In the 1830, Brooklyn was composed of two cities; The City of Williamsburgh and the City of Brooklyn. The City of Brooklyn annex Williamsburgh and dropped the "h". The building out of rail lines 1878 led to explosive growth, increasing the population from 36,000 inhabitants to 96,000 in just a few years. In the space of a decade, the City of Brooklyn annexed the Town of New Lots in 1886, the Town of Flatbush, the Town of Gravesend, and the Town of New Utrecht in 1894, and the Town of Flatlands in 1896. By 1896, Brooklyn had reached its present boundaries.
The Brooklyn Bridge was completed in 1883, making for a quick connection to Manhattan. In 1894, Brooklyn residents voted, by a slight majority, to join with Manhattan, The Bronx, Queens, and Richmond (later Staten Island) to become the five boroughs of the modern New York City. In 1898 it became official, Brooklyn was now part of Greater New York City.
