Brighton Beach / Seagate (Brooklyn Apartments) Neighborhood Information for Apartment Renters
- Brighton Beach
- Brighton Beach is a favorite place for Soviet Russian Jews who move to the U.S.; by some estimates, they make up 80% of the residents. You'll see shops with Cyrillic signs selling all your favorite Russian comfort foods as you stroll through the quiet streets. These communities began in the mid-1800s as summer retreats for New York's European immigrants (hence being named after the English resort) and became year-round homes for mostly dispossessed Jewish Brooklynites forced by the Great Depression to move into these modest houses not meant for year-round use. Brighton Beach is now the destination of choice for people seeking family-oriented living. New luxury condos are being constructed along the coast, which shows that people have discovered Brighton Beach.
- Seagate
- On the other end on the peninsula is Seagate, New York City's only gated community. As Coney Island faded as a resort destination, the city constructed huge, architecturally ugly public housing projects. Crime and decay followed, alienating the middle class who left in droves. The city sought to reassure well-to-do residents by building a gate between Coney Island's public housing and Seagate's private residences. Apartment buildings, single-family houses, and grand summer homes can be found behind the gate. Pedestrians need to show ID to get inside at night, and anyone arriving in a car or truck must show ID at all times.
