Cobble Hill / Boerum Hill / Carroll Gardens (Brooklyn Apartments) Neighborhood Information for Apartment Renters

This is Brooklyn's garden spot. Most of the houses have cultivated patches in the front, and combine that with the tree-lined streets and lovely townhouses and you've got serenity. This area is less expensive than Brooklyn Heights, with many more converted townhouses as floor-thru apartments. People here are proud of their neighborhood and they happily welcome newcomers who maintain the garden spirit. This area is especially suited for young people just starting a family or career.

Cobble Hill: Architecturally similar to Brooklyn Heights but on a less grand scale. Many neighborhoods have been designated as a historical district, so there won't be much new construction. Almost all middle and upper-middle income residents. Court Street is the main shopping street. Lots of Near and Middle Eastern grocery stores on Atlantic Ave.
Boerum Hill: East and downhill from Cobble Hill. Named for colonial farmer Simon Boerum. State Street has twice won The Greenest Block in Brooklyn Contest. Housing consists of blocks of three and four story brownstones and row houses.
Carroll Gardens: Named for Charles Carroll, the only Roman Catholic Irishman to sign the Declaration of Independence. Traditionally an Italian neighborhood, so it's easy to find Italian restaurants and bakeries. Newcomers are always welcome. Limited new housing, though; there's some conversions happening to the southern and eastern edges. Avoid the Gowanas Canal area.
