Fort Hamilton / Bay Ridge (Brooklyn Apartments) Neighborhood Information for Apartment Renters

Fort Hamilton: Completed in 1831, it was known originally as the Narrows, but was later renamed in honor of Alexander Hamilton. Without ever firing a shot, this fort at the Narrows held the British fleet at bay during the war of 1812 and perhaps saved New York City from the fate of the nation's capital which was burned by the British. During the Civil War, Fort Hamilton's garrison expanded and became an important Federal Prison for captured Confederates. The post commander during the first months of war was Abner Doubleday, called by some the inventor of baseball. In the two World Wars Fort Hamilton served as a major embarkation and separation center. Fort Hamilton is home to Irish, Italian, Hispanic, and Polish immigrants. Great public schools, diverse population, and open space are the uniqueness of this region. And, thanks to the generations of immigrant families, this small-town neighborhood has a cultural vitality worthy of the big city.
Bay Ridge: The "Ridge" in Bay Ridge is a glacial ridge left during the last Ice Age. There is a steep hill between Ridge Boulevard and Colonial Road that, in some cases, is too steep for vehicular traffic, which necessitates a rare Brooklyn step street. Bay Ridge is a spacious and uncrowded residential district. Many Scandinavians make their homes here. In the late 1800s, Bay Ridge was one of Brooklyn's most exclusive suburbs and the Shore Road section still contains many homes of the wealthy. Bay Ridge was different than other waterfront neighborhoods because it wasn't dominated by industry at its shoreline - it was meant to be enjoyed as a city oasis by the bay. The sunset views along Shoreline Parkway are gorgeous, and all the most expensive housing is still along this road. This is a conservative neighborhood, with a mix of longtime Italian, Irish, Russian, Asian, Middle-Eastern, and Eastern European Jewish residents. However, it's a long way into Manhattan - plan at least an hour for the commute.
