Brooklyn Apartment Rental Info
Kensington / Ocean Parkway / Midwood (Brooklyn Apartments) Neighborhood Information for Apartment Renters
- Kensington
- In Kensington, named after a western borough of London, the large Victorian homes are the right size for the large Hassidic and Muslim families that dominate the community. You won't find much industry here, or many arty shops; what you will find is gracious, suburban living options. Residents worked to develop community groups to confront and dispel the tensions and misunderstandings that arose about the Muslim community after the attacks of 9/11. Neighbors live quietly and respect their differences. The chic shops can be found at The Plaza on Newkirk Ave. Kensington is home of immigrants from Pakistan, Asia, East India, Poland, Indonesia, Turkey, Mexico, Haiti, Guyana, Dominican Republic, and Jamaica, but it is dominated by Italian American and Jewish population.
- Ocean Parkway
- Ocean Parkway is a small neighborhood along (what else?) Ocean Parkway. In the years before World War I, affluent New Yorkers built large mansions along Ocean Parkway, close to the still-unspoiled beachfront. After the subway expanded to Coney Island, a surge of apartment-house construction attracted immigrants, particularly Italians and Jews, in search of low rents, job opportunities, and proximity to the fresh ocean air. In the 1920s and 1930s modest, low-cost, single-family summer bungalows proliferated.
- Midwood
- Midwood, from the Dutch midwout, for "middle woods", was a forested area settled in 1652. The area remained mostly undeveloped until its annexation as part of NYC in 1898. Midwood brings together Hassidic, Middle-Eastern, Latino, Pakistani, and Russian residents.
