 Hamilton Heights, to the north of Manhattanville, is a little-known area named for Alexander Hamilton, a Founding Father and the first Treasury Secretary. His former country home is now a landmarked branch of the New York Public Library called Hamilton Grange. Also landmarked are many brownstones in an area called Hamilton Terrace, home to many professionals from City College. Convent Ave, in the Hamilton Heights Historical District, is a blossom-lined street with a suburban feel. You'll find Gothic, French and Italian Renaissance architecture, remnants of the building boom of the 1890s. Sugar Hill, which extends from Edgecomb Ave to Amsterdam Ave, originated in the late 1920's during the Harlem Renaissance when black professionals began moving into this "sweet and expensive" area. It's still a firmly bourgeois residential area.
