Secaucus: Secaucus, pronounced SEE-kaw-kuss by the locals and Suh-KAW-kuss by New Yorkers, is an Algonquian meaning "salt marsh" and/or "where the black snake hides". Today the marshy origins of the town can be enjoyed in the town's many nature preserves: Snipes Beach Park, The Duck Pond, Schmidts Woods, and a major meadowlands preserve in the northern sector of the town. The trailhead of the 1.5-mile long Mill Creek Marsh Trail is especially good for bird watching. The Hackensack Riverkeeper (201-920-4746) rents canoes and kayaks on weekends from April through October. The Hackensack Riverkeeper Cruise Program, (201-968-0808) offers two-hour guided naturalist trips on the river and through the marshes of the Meadowlands. Secaucus is also known for its many factory-outlet centers and an area of industrial development, especially in the high-technology fields. The Secaucus Junction has become an important transfer station for the New Jersey Transit passenger trains to New YorkCity.
Harmon Cove: Harmon Cove, a complex within Secaucus, is the first mixed-use development created by Hartz Mountain Industries, Inc,. It contains warehouses, distribution and office space, 120 outlet stores, three hotels, a 200-bed Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center, and 1,400 townhouses and condominiums.
