Weehawken / West New York / North Bergen / Guttenberg / Union City (New Jersey Apartments) Neighborhood Information for Apartment Renters
Guttenberg (German for "good mountain") on the Palisades, heading south through West New York and Weehawken to Union City, these four towns face Manhattan's Upper West Side down to the Lincoln Tunnel. The Swiss came to West New York and Union City for its embroidery business. North Bergen calls itself the "Embroidery Captial of America." Today, Union City is predominantly Spanish. The 3 1/2 miles of Bergenline Ave is bustling with Spanish businesses, especially "Mi Bandera," a large grocery store with a restaurant upstairs.
Weehawken is known as the place where Aaron Burr shot Alexander Hamilton in one of the last duels fought on American soil. The site is now a small park on JFK Boulevard East, and there's a plaque commemorating the duel on a bluff a few yards away from the actual site.
The Palisades are cliffs that run from the Hudson/Bergen County border to the New York Stateline. The name "palisades" comes from the military enclosure made of spikes driven into the ground, and was applied here because the rockface has columnar ridges that resemble spikes.
