The Borough of Queens was officially formed in 1897. Two years later, in 1899, the eastern 280 square miles of Queens were broken off to become Nassau County on Long Island. From 1905 to 1908 the Long Island Railroad was electrified through Queens and in 1909 the Queensboro Bridge (also known as the 59th Street Bridge) was officially dedicated. There is currently a movement underway to rename the bridge "The Edward I. Koch/Queensboro Bridge".
Between 1920 and 1930, the population of Queens doubled to 1,079,129 with the addition of the IRT Flusining Line subway between Manhattan and Queens. In both 1939 and 1964, Queens was the site of the New York World's Fair. Two of New York's major airports are also located in Queens, LaGuardia Airport and JFK Airport (originally known as Idlewild Airport).
Final factoid: The oldest living thing in New York lives in Queens. The tallest tree in the New York metropolitan area, called the Queens Giant, is located in northeastern Queens, and is 450 years old and 132 feet tall as of 2005.
