Queens Apartment Rental Info
Astoria / Long Island City (Queens Apartments) Neighborhood Information for Apartment Renters
- Astoria
- Astoria is just one subway stop away from Manhattan, making it very desirable for city dwellers looking for cheaper rents. However, there are almost no high-rises here and the housing is not at all fancy, so you're definitely in Queens. Astoria has long been known for its tight-knit Greek community, although it's actually almost equal parts Greek and Hispanic. Astoria was a movie-making center in the early years of the industry, and since the 1982 rededication of the Kaufman Astoria Studios, movie-making magic has returned to New York. And if you like to eat, Astoria is for you: specialty food shops, restaurants, and fresh vegetable vendors are jammed into every block. And better Greek food can't be found in Athens.
- Long Island City
- As Astoria's rents have risen, Long Island City became the focus of real estate conversions. Long Island City had been mostly an industrial center, with few residential areas. As heavy industry leaves, the factories are being converted into lofts or are being razed for new construction. Long Island City is crowded with two-family homes and small rental buildings. This is not a fancy neighborhood, but it is safe and friendly. There's still not many amenities, but Astoria is just next door.
