Hollis (Queens Apartments) Neighborhood Information for Apartment Renters
- Hollis
- Run DMC called Hollis home, as well as Gov. Mario Cuomo. Can you get more middle class? Originally farmland, Hollis was developed by Frederick W. Dunton, nephew of the first president of the Long Island Railroad in the 1880s, who gave it the name of his home town in New Hampshire. Now a culturally-diverse black neighborhood of Victorians and row houses, the community has a suburban feel but is far from remote because of plentiful bus service and its proximity to highways. And the residents love their schools: P.S. 188, which consistently scores at the top, or close to it, on city and state tests. It is ranked as the top school in School District 26, which itself is ranked tops in the city. It is also listed among the Top 10 public schools in New York State. A lot of the children who grow up in the neighborhood remain in the community to raise their own families. Most of the housing was built in the late 1950s. Styles are a mix of colonials, ranches, split-levels and Tudors. All are single-family with the rare exception of a couple that are legal two-families. The main shopping streets are Jamaica and Hillside avenues.
