Queens Apartment Rental Info
Maspeth / Ridgewood (Queens Apartments) Neighborhood Information for Apartment Renters
- Maspeth
- Originally known as Mespat after the Indian tribe of that name, Maspeth was settled in 1642 by a group who came from Massachusetts. It is the oldest of Long Island's colonial sites. Newtown and Maspeth creeks attracted industry to the area, with Newtown Creek at one time carrying almost as much traffic as the Mississippi River. One of the few remaining buildings from its past is the Maspeth Town Hall, built in 1897 and now serving as the community center. The neighborhood continues to have a largely industrial character, but residential and commercial areas thrive in inland areas. Its neighborhood of private houses are owned predominately by persons of German, Italian, Irish, Polish or Lithuanian descent. Grand Avenue is a major shopping street. There is no subway service in Maspeth.
- Ridgewood
- Ridegewood attracted primarily German settlers in the 1840s and 1850s, and a number of breweries were started in the area. Walk down the main commerical roads, Fresh Pond Road and Myrtle Ave, and you'll still see the German influence, with later immigrants from Italy, Yugoslavia and Central and South America adding to the mix. Housing consists of multi-family houses; no co-ops or condos are available. Rents tend to be cheaper at the edges of the neighborhood. Onderdonk House is considered a rare example of a surviving Dutch Colonial farmhouse, built in the late 18th century.
