Springfield Gardens was originally named just Springfield. The word "garden" was added later on and named after a popular co-op in the area. Springfield Gardens was originally home to rich farmland, today it is a nice suburb of New York City to raise a family. Springfield Gardens convenient access to LIRR makes it a popular area to live in.

Later, this area was inhabited by people who migrated from Brooklyn looking for a suburban feel. North of JFK, District 31 is largely comprised of the African-American middle class neighborhoods of Springfield Gardens, Laurelton, and Rosedale and the residents have one of the highest median incomes in the borough.
