Eastchester / Bronxville / Fleetwood / Tuckahoe (Westchester Apartments) Neighborhood Information for Apartment Renters
Bronxville and Tuckahoe are villages within the town of Eastchester, but they are three different places, each with its own history, character and sense of community. (There is a neighborhood in the Bronx called "Eastchester", but that's distinctly different from Westchester's Eastchester.) Fleetwood is an unincorporated hamlet that is sometimes considered part of the city of Mount Vernon.
- Eastchester
- Eastchester is a tidy town of landscaped lawns and proud homeowners. It has a wonderful school system where 98% of the students pursue higher education. The town's ten parks and fields are available for residents' use. An exclusive community of apartments, detached houses and town houses known as Lake Isle has grown up around a lake, the former town reservoir. Lake Isle Country Club is a beautiful 116-acre public facility available to all residents for a membership fee, providing 5 pools, 18-hole golf course, 6 tennis courts. Upscale shopping can be found at Vernon Hills Shopping Center.
- Bronxville
- This is an affluent village where homes sell for a million dollars. It was named for the borough of Bronx, which was originally part of Westchester. The village was developed by William Van Duser Lawrence, a millionaire who built posh homes in Bronxville and sold them to his friends. He founded Sarah Lawrence College in 1928 in Bronxville, in memory of his wife.
- Fleetwood
- "Tuckahoe" comes from an Algonquin Indian word for a plant whose root was a source of nutrition for native Americans from Virginia to New Jersey. "Tuckahoe marble" (actually, a granite) was used in the nation's Capitol building and the Washington Monument. The quarries are no longer a component of Tuckahoe's economy.
- Tuckahoe
- Fleetwood is a hamlet, which means it's smaller than a village. This corner of Mount Vernon was part of Eastchester until 1853. As a part of Mount Vernon, Fleetwood shares that city's vibrancy where 30% of the population is foreign born. Mount Vernon has struggled from time to time, and about 15% if the residents live below the poverty line.
