Hastings-On-Hudson / Dobbs Ferry / Irvington / Ardsley (Westchester Apartments) Neighborhood Information for Apartment Renters
All of these river villages (and Ardsley, which is inland) are affluent and attract academics and artists. Residents like being old-fashioned. You won't see tract homes, national retail outlets, or fast-food chains in these villages, but you'll gain spectacular views along the Hudson River.
- Hastings-On-Hudson
-
The area that is now Hastings-on-Hudson was once the home of the Weckquaesgeek Indians, one of the Algonquin tribes. It's located in an area of hills on the Hudson River opposite the Palisades cliffs, north of the city of Yonkers. The many hills afford beautiful views of the river, the Palisades and Manhattan to the south. In 1879, the village was incorporated and its name changed from Hastings-Upon-Hudson to Hastings-on-Hudson.
Stone quarrying was the earliest industry in Hastings. From 1865 to 1871, hundreds of Scottish and Irish laborers blasted huge quantities of dolomite marble from a white marble quarry. Today, it still is very much an industrial waterfront community. The 8000 plus residents of Hastings-on-Hudson take great pride in their unique community, boasting a population that includes folks from many backgrounds, faiths, incomes levels and lifestyles. Most residents agree that Hastings is not your typical Westchester suburb.
- Dobbs Ferry
- Named after Jeremiah (or Jan) Dobbs, who began operating a ferry here in 1698. It has retained its quaint, small-town Americana. Old Croton Aqueduct Trailway runs through Dobbs Ferry, where hikers can take in spectacular views of the Hudson River and Palisades. Older homes are known for their Vermont slate roofs. The 2002 movie "Unfaithful" was filmed here.
- Irvington
- Irvington is named for America's first renowned author, Washington Irving, who lived in a cottage on Sunnyside Lane from 1835 to 1859. Beginning in the late 1850's, Irvington became a showplace of opulent estates. Though some remain, there is now a diverse mix of housing, ranging from new condominiums to older village Colonials.
- Ardsley
- This is a small village that doesn't like to call attention to itself. Sadly, large portions of the village were demolished in the 1930s to make way for the Mill River Parkway and the New York State Thruway.
